Technology: Languages, 4GL, Script Language, and Tools

Acronym for common business oriented language. Developed in the late 1950s and early 1960s, COBOL is the second-oldest high-level programming language (FORTRAN is the oldest). It is particularly popular for business applications that run on large computers. Although disparaged by many programmers for being outdated, COBOL is still the most widely used programming language in the world.

ABAP (Advanced Business Application Programming) is a programming language for developing applications for the SAP system. The latest version, ABAP Objects, is object-oriented programming. SAP will run applications written using ABAP/4, the earlier ABAP version, as well as applications using ABAP Objects.

ColdFusion Server is the deployment platform for delivering ColdFusion Web applications.  Running as a multithreaded service with native support for load balancing and fail over, ColdFusion server provides a highly scalable foundation for high volume, content rich, transaction-intensive Web applications.  ColdFusion studio is an integrated development environment with an array of highly productive visual tools for creating ColdFusion applications.  It includes extensive HTML editing technology and incorporates visual database, programming and debugging tools as well as support for remote team development, site management and deployment.  ColdFusion Studio is licensed separately from ColdFusion Server.

The CONNX for RMS module provides secure, real-time, read/write access to RMS files on HP Open VMS servers.  CONNX provides RMS ODBC data access, RMS OLE DB data access, RMS JDBC data access, and Microsoft.NET RMS data access.  CONNX RMS access is fast and efficient.  With CONNX, a single metadata model can be created that spans all enterprise data sources and applications requiring data access.  The result is an enterprise-wide view of data that provides a reusable standards-based framework for information access.  CONNX supports over 400 RMS and OpenVMS data type conversions.  CONNX performs joins between multiple RMS files using a single SQL statement, otherwise impossible without custom development, and simplifies manipulation of large arrays through its unique Rotated Array Technology.  The CONNX distributed SQL engine uses advanced index optimization to ensure maximum performance when retrieving data from RMS files.

The CONNX for RMS module also supports VMS Remote Procedure Calls, allowing remote execution of batch jobs, procedures, and applications.  CONNX for RMS provides a single point of access to RMS files on separate physical OpenVMS servers, and performs seamless joins between the RMS files.

Modules included in CONNX for RMS are as follows:

  • CONNX configuration manager

  • CONNX data dictionary

  • InfoNaut query tool

  • OpenVMS server setup

InfoMaker is a powerful and easy -to-use reporting tool that queries databases and creates sophisticated and effective custom reports of data.  It enables users to work with data in a database and provides built-in connectivity to a broad range of desktop and server-based databases.  It creates all SQL statements behind the scenes using a graphic interface.

FOCUS is the SIS Plus reporting tool. It is a fourth generation programming language which requires limited programming experience to use. It enables the extraction and download of data in various forms from the SIS Plus system.
